What is Hanna Somatics?

Hanna Somatics is a system of neuromuscular re-education (mind-body training) that goes directly to the root cause of most pain and disfunction in the muscles of your body: the brain.

The muscles in your body maintain their level of tension due to signals from your brain telling them to contract. Over time, the muscles in your body adopt poor habits, where they stay much tighter than they need to. This can be caused by physical, mental, or emotional stress.

The solution to the problem is to retrain the brain to use only the minimal amount of effort needed for whatever you are doing.

Chronically tight areas of the body can lead to Sensory Motor Amnesia. This condition is when your brain has essentially forgotten how to communicate with certain areas of your muscles. Your brain cannot sense those areas, nor have them contract or relax on command.

This also affects the level of coordination in your body. When your brain cannot control or feel certain areas of your body, it will do the best it can with what it has, but your coordination and athletic performance will suffer.

The movement education of Hanna Somatics is able to eliminate Sensory Motor Amnesia from your body, leading to the removal the excess tension from your muscles. This leads to the removal of disfunction in the muscles of the body, and can greatly decrease or eliminate muscles pain.

Your coordination and athletic performance will greatly improve as well. The better the information the brain has, and the better it can control the body, the better your body will be able to function.

And it is not really an all-or-nothing scenario. Your brain can have varying degrees of awareness/sensation and control of your muscles.

And it is always the case that these levels of awareness and control can be improved upon. It is a skill like any other you can learn, but one that is the most basic and fundamental building block of all other physical skills.

The better you are at this most basic skill, the better you will be at everything else you do, and the faster you will be able to learn and improve.

Beyond Hanna Somatics

I have combined the principles of Hanna Somatics with Rolfing movement and manual therapy to form a new system of movement education.

I developed it myself when the two systems independently did not give me all the results I was looking for. It is far more effective, easier on the body, and something you can learn to do on your own if you are interested. By developing something that I can use on my own body, I have gotten immediate and direct feedback as to what is most effective in changing the body.

This has enabled me to develop a system of removing tension that is superior to all others by experimenting on what is most effective in my own body.
